Direction for Use

Feeding Preparation:

  • Always mix Neocare fresh before each feed.
  • Do not re-use or refrigerate pre-mixed formula.
  • Never use a microwave to heat formula as it can create hot spots and cause crop burns.
  • Always use a fork to mix. This ensures proper mixing and consistency. Do not use a spoon.
  • Formula should always be between 38-41°C when feeding to avoid crop burns and indigestion.

Neonate / Transition Feeding
(Use for hatchlings and babies under 5 days old)

  • Always start with a very runny mix. Add 2 small level scoops of Neocare formula to a mixing cup, followed by 1 large scoop and 1 small scoop of boiling water.
  • Mix thoroughly using a fork for 30 seconds or until an even consistency is achieved. It is very important to ensure that you mix using a fork, using the back side of the fork to push through and stir the mixture.
  • Ensure the formula is a smooth consistency and that there are no dry lumps. Check the temperature, and then feed.
  • Over the next 48 hours, gradually thicken formula until the regular mixing level (outlined below) is reached.

Regular Feeding
(Use for babies over 5 days old)

  • Add one large level scoop of Neocare to a mixing cup, followed by one large scoop of boiling water.
  • Mix thoroughly using a fork for 30 seconds until a thick and consistent paste is formed. It is very important to ensure that you mix using a fork, using the back side of the fork to push through and stir the mixture.
  • Add a further 3 small scoops of cool water and mix for a further 2 minutes or until an even consistency is achieved.
  • Ensure the formula is a smooth consistency and that there are no dry lumps. Check the temperature, and then feed.

Feeding Frequency

The first feed of the day should be approximately 5-6am, and the last feed between 10-11pm. Once every 24 hours, usually at the start of the day, the crop should be allowed to empty completely. The age and species of birds being raised affects the amount and frequency of feeds, so it is important to research individual requirements thoroughly before you begin. Always record your baby’s weight each day before feeding.

Food Preparation

What are Pitfalls?

Temperature

Food temperature needs to be spot on and replicate the temperature of feed regurgitated by the parent bird. Feed too cold and risk slowing digestion - or worse, causing crop stasis and infection. Feeding too hot can cause crop burns - which are often fatal. Even a minor crop burn can create complications that continue for weeks. Control and monitor the temperature of your feed by using a thermometer. The ideal temperature is generally between 38-41°C

Reusing Pre-Mixed Food

Don’t cut corners by recycling pre-mixed batches of formula. When sealed in original packaging, our hand rearing formulas are essentially sterile. When you add water, mix, and leave in the refrigerator, the formula becomes the ideal breeding ground for bacteria and other contaminants. Fresh batches are the best way to keep your babies safe from harmful pathogens
