Storage Instructions

We do not recommend freezing your pet's foods. Freezing canned pet food dramatically changes the texture of products and may adversely affect palatability. Your pet's feeding bowl should be emptied of moist or moistened food not consumed by the pet within four hours if the ambient temperature is above 10 degrees celcius. Prior to opening, store cans in a place where the temperature is between 10-30 degrees celicius. We do not suggest storing your pet's food in an uncontrolled environment such as a garage or outdoors. After opening, canned products should be covered and stored in a refrigerator. In general, refrigerated canned foods should be used within five to seven days after opening. Canned products with high amounts of rice often have separation of water from the other canned product (free water will be seen at the bottom or around the side of the can) within a few days. This separation of water is called syneresis and does not change the nutritional characteristics of the food, but will affect food texture and possibly palatability. Since freezing dramatically changes the texture of canned products and adversely effects palatability, freezing canned pet food is not recommended either before or after opening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Just like people, eating amounts vary from pet to pet. Most Hill's pet foods have a feeding guide on the package to help you determine the proper amount to feed your pet. Please keep in mind that the feeding guide is intended only as a starting point, and you should follow your veterinarian’s recommendation based on your pet's specific health needs.

Opened cans of Science Diet, Healthy Advantage or Prescription Diet cat or dog food should be stored in the fridge to retain moisture, minimize exposure to air and reduce transfer of odors to other food. The best way to store opened cans of cat or dog food is to use a plastic pet food lid that fits the top of the can to prevent moisture loss and transfer of odors. If a plastic lid is not available, plastic wrap also provides a very good moisture, air and odor barrier. Zip-to-close bags provide good moisture barriers but do not provide good oxygen and odor barriers.

Prior to opening, store cans in a place where the temperature is between 50-100°F. Do not freeze canned cat or dog food as it can change the texture and taste of the food.

3 Steps to Transitioning Your Cat to a New Pet Food

Determine the right amount per serving
Make sure that you’re not overfeeding your cat and the portions they get are appropriate for their weight and health needs. A good way to start is by checking the feeding guide on your cat’s food packaging, but your veterinarian will have the best recommendation.

Follow this 7-day transition schedule
Over a week, gradually decrease the amount of your pet’s current cat food while increasing the amount of new cat food. For finicky cats, the transition time could take 10 days or slightly longer.

Add a little wet food if needed
Cats can be wary of changes, especially new foods. A little canned food can go a long way in getting them to try a new food. If you do add wet food, take those calories into account so you don't overfeed, and make sure to check with your vet on the proper amount.
